  • This is @seanpopegeraghty - the American half of @spiel.media. And while I'm not celebrating a traditional Thanksgiving today, I will let you know what I'm thankful for.

I'm thankful for living in Ireland and especially Kilkenny. Initially, the people I met thought I was mad for leaving sunny California to live in the "Sunny South East" of Ireland. But nearly eight years into my living here, and everybody sees the absolute madness of life in America, they get it when I say that weather isn't everything. I've made some great friends and met the loveliest Irish lass (@jeanneodwyer77) I could imagine.

I'm thankful for my family that have not only supported me my entire life, but especially these last 10 years. Starting with the death of my wife, then relocating thousands of miles away to a place where I barely knew anybody, to keeping me sane through COVID, and being generous not only when I stay in California, but when my friends do too. I include Brownie and Linc as my family as they have certainly kept me active, entertained and grounded.

I'm thankful for the friends I've made in Ireland. Especially the partnership I have with @alanjarmitage
here at Spiel Media. Because of that partnership I've been able to keep building websites, make videos and promote companies on platforms like this. Here are the companies that have helped to keep me fed, warm and otherwise pay my bills so I can continue to stay in this amazing country!

As I said, I'm not observing a traditional Thanksgiving of a huge meal with family. I'm not watching football and TV show marathons. Nor am I relaxing by the pool in the amazing Southern California Weather (ok, I kinda wish I was doing that!). But I am enjoying my best life. And for that, I'm thankful.

Thrilled to share the story behind one of my earlier projects: the logo design for Duggan Steel (@duggansteelgroup).

The company was the original Duggan Steel, established in 1976 and growing into a major Irish supplier of steel and construction components. I was commissioned for this identity by the Managing Director, the late Francis Duggan, while their head office was on the Dublin Road in Kilkenny.
The initial concept began as a final year Corporate Identity project at the Limerick College of Art & Design. While college provides a great learning environment, nothing beats the real world for giving you a "kick in the ass." Successfully pitching the design to Francis Duggan in 1993, moving beyond fictitious briefs to tackle real clients and real problems, proved the true value of the work.

While our focus currently includes strategic branding projects like Belclare Advisory Services LLC-FZ, itโ€™s always inspiring to look back at the strategic foundations of my own career.

Way back in my early days as a freelance Graphic Designer, when "colour outputs" meant grabbing the colouring pencils ๐Ÿ–๏ธ, I had the privilege of creating a logo for a local Kilkenny institution: O 'Dwyer Insurance on Patrick Street. The company was led by Jack O 'Dwyer at the time, and many local to Kilkenny will certainly remember them.

This project taught me that ๐’Ž๐’†๐’‚๐’๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐’‚๐’๐’… The focus was always on clear communication.

The logo is a simple, abstract motif combining the three initials: O, D, and i for O 'Dwyer Insurance. I added a slab serif and an angled ascender on the 'd' to give the motif a subtle Irish feel.

I used three "i" elements to symbolize the client-business relationship of Security, Protection, and Support, with the central, highlighted 'i' representing the client or individual at the heart of their service. The chosen colors of deep Maroon/Burgundy and Gold were selected to evoke feelings of warmth, security, and trust, essential values for an insurance broker.
